American Anthropological Association Minority Dissertation Fellowship

The American Anthropological Association invites minority doctoral candidates in anthropology to apply for a full-year dissertation fellowship of $10,000. This program is designed to demonstrate the AAA's support for promising minority graduate students in anthropology and to demonstrate its commitment to the long-range goal of increasing diversity in the discipline.

 

American Chemical Society Grants

Established in 1991, the program offers doctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding minority scholars for academic appointments at major research universities by supporting them conducting research and by providing mentoring and guidance towards completion of their doctoral studies

 

American Geological Institute Minority Geoscience Scholarships

American Planning Association Minority Planning Fellowships

Planning Fellowships to encourage minority students to enter the planning profession and to help such students who would otherwise be unable to continue their studies in planning. American Political Science Association

The APSA Minority Fellows Program, was established in 1969 as an effort to increase the number of minority scholars in the discipline, has designated more than 300 fellows and contributed to the successful completion of doctoral political science programs for over 70 individuals.  This year, the Association has refocused and increased its efforts to assist minority students in completing their doctorates by concentrating not only on the recruitment of minorities, but also on the retention of these groups within the profession.

The David Stevenson Fellowship will be awarded to junior faculty members of color in tenure track positions. (Doctoral candidates of color may also be considered for these awards.)

 

Department Of Defense National Science &Engineering Graduate Fellowships

The NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students who are at or near the beginning or their graduate study for a Ph.D. in science or engineering. Ninety-seven percent of fellowships are awarded to students who are graduating seniors or in their first year of graduate study. Fellowships are awarded for a maximum period of three years of graduate study. Ten percent of these awards are set aside for applicants from underrepresented minority groups. The first year stipend is currently $23,500 based on a 12 month academic year. In addition tuition and academic fees will be paid. The award can be renewed for two more years of support if the student has made satisfactory academic progress.  The NDSEG covers graduate study in the following fields: aeronautical and astronautical engineering, biosciences, chemistry and chemical engineering, cognitive, neural and behavioral sciences, computer sciences, electrical engineering, geosciences, manufacturing and industrial engineering, materials science and engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, oceanography and physics.

IBM Research Internship for Black, Hispanic, & Native American Students

IBM sponsors a research internship program for under-represented minorities. The goal is to encourage under-represented sophomore and junior minority students to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering. The internships are salaried positions typically 10 weeks long at one of three IBM research locations (San Jose, CA, Austin, TX, or Yorktown Heights, NY), and include in addition a $2,500 grant, plus the opportunity to work with an IBM mentor. The Watson lab has a full range of research, as does the Almaden lab and the Austin lab focuses on software and systems. Research areas of the internship are chosen to optimize the match between skills and interests of the student, and the ongoing research programs of the laboratory.

NASA Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship for Underrepresented

The Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program provides full-time underrepresented graduate students in science, technology and education with financial support for their education in NASA-related disciplines. Students are selected for fellowships that include financial support and a 6-week, hands-on research experience at a NASA Center or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Fellowship tenure is three years for candidates seeking either a master's or Ph.D. degree in the NASA-related fields. The mission of the JPFP is to increase the number of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities participating in mathematics, science, engineering, technology disciplines. Up to 20 Fellows will be selected annually to receive support for graduate education in NASA-related disciplines. The program serves underrepresented students who are matriculating at any accredited U.S. university or college, and engaging in the science, mathematics, engineering and technology (STEM) fields. With stipends, travel allowances and tuition offsets included, JPFP award packages currently start at $24,500 per year.

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships For Minorities & Women

Applicants should have research experience in one of the following fields: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, or in related engineering fields such as Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical.  NPSC welcomes applications from all qualified students, with continued emphasis on the recruiting of underrepresented minorities and women. Applicants must be graduating seniors with at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA, in their first year of a graduate program pursuing a Ph.D., be in a terminal master's program, or be returning from the workforce with no more than a master's degree. Persons who already possess a doctoral degree in any field are ineligible.

The NPSC awards up to $16,000 stipends for students aspiring to earn a doctoral degree the physical sciences, biochemistry, computer science, and related fields of science and engineering.

NIH NIGMS Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program

The program goal is to heighten the interest of the post-baccalaureate participants from underrepresented groups in such areas of scientific research as cell biology, biophysics, biochemistry, genetics, eurobiology, physiology, computational biology and behavioral sciences.  Institutions with programs that have demonstrated significant experience in training Ph.D. candidates in the biomedical sciences and/or behavioral sciences may request from six to 12 post-baccalaureate positions, with a maximum of no more than 12 per year for each year of the grant (i.e., 60 participants for a five-year grant period), for individuals to engage in mentored research studies and student development activities under the direction of faculty preceptors.

NIH Research Supplements To Promote Diversity In Health-Related Research

The NIH hereby notifies Principal Investigators holding specific types of NIH research grants (listed in the full announcement) that funds are available for administrative supplements to improve the diversity of the research workforce by supporting and recruiting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented. Although the administrative supplements supported under this program provide funding for less than one percent of all individuals involved in NIH supported research, the NIH has found these awards to be an effective means of encouraging institutions to recruit from currently underrepresented groups. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement program awards grants to institutions of higher education for projects designed to prepare participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. McNair participants are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated strong academic potential. Institutions work closely with these participants through their undergraduate requirements, encourage their entrance into graduate programs, and track their progress to successful completion of advanced degrees. The goal of McNair is to increase the attainment of the Ph.D. by students from underrepresented segments of society.

Graduate fellowship program (http://www.src.org/member/about/aboutgfp.asp).  The Graduate Fellowship Program (GFP) addresses the issues of improving educational opportunities at the doctoral level and supplying a relevantly educated work force for the semiconductor industry.  The SRC Master's Scholarship Program was created in 1997 for the purpose of attracting qualified students who are also in under represented minority categories to graduate study in areas of interest to the semiconductor industry. In 1999, the program was opened to women as a category.

The goal of the Minority Neuroscience Fellowship Program (MNFP) is to increase the diversity of groups pursuing careers in neuroscience research, and teaching programs. This fellowship program is designed to increase diversity in neuroscience with a special focus on increasing numbers of traditionally underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities engaged in neuroscience research in preeminent laboratories. Training stipends are available for pre-doctoral (up to 3 years) and postdoctoral (up to 2 years) fellowships.

Provides support for new Americans - naturalized U.S. citizen, child of two parents who are both naturalized U.S. citizens, or a resident alien who holds a Green Card. Full support is given for two years of graduate study in the United States. Fellows receive a $20,000 maintenance grant and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of graduate program.
