American Cancer Society, Extramural Grants Program. Institutional Research Grants

The purpose of the IRG program is (1) to support the development of newly independent investigators to conduct cancer research; (2) to foster direct relationships between funded institutions and the local American Cancer Society (ACS); and (3) to support research by newly independent investigators in areas of special interest to the ACS (psychosocial and behavioral research, health policy or health services research, cancer in the poor and underserved, and childhood cancer).

Antimicrobial Resistance

The purpose of this RFA is two fold: (1) to develop new methods to prevent transmission of Antimicrobial Resistant (AR) pathogens (R01) and (2) to reduce Community-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) Infection in households (U01). The purpose of the R01 award is to develop novel methods for controlling transmission of antimicrobial resistant bacterial pathogens with the intent of interrupting transmission to such a degree that rates of infection due to antimicrobial resistant pathogens are favorably impacted, the overall health of the population is improved, and healthcare cost savings are realized.

Biomass Research and Development Initiative

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) jointly solicit applications for financial assistance addressing research, development, and demonstration of biomass based products, bioenergy, biofuels and related processes.

NIH Pathway to Independence (PI) Award (K99/R00)

This initiative will develop and implement a new Pathway to Independence Award Program (PI) designed to facilitate receiving an R01 award earlier in an investigator’s research career.  The primary, long-term goal of the PI Award Program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented, NIH-supported independent investigators.  The Pathway to Independence Award will provide up to five years of support consisting of two phases.  The initial phase will provide 1-2 years of mentored support for highly promising, postdoctoral research scientists.  This phase will be followed by up to 3 years of independent support contingent on securing an independent research position.

Public Consultation to Inform the Design of Possible Large-Scale Studies of Genes and Environment in Common Disease (U01)

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to provide support for a specialized center to conduct a pilot public consultation study to obtain wide societal input to inform the design of a possible large U.S.-based longitudinal cohort study of the role of genes and environment in health and disease.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biological Informatics

The National Science Foundation offers Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biological Informatics to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in developing and using computational, statistical, and other tools in the collection, organization, dissemination, and use of information to solve problems in biology. The research and training plan of each fellowship is expected to address important scientific questions in contemporary biology and include a bold linkage between computer, information, and computational science and biology and develop and/or apply state of the art informatics tools or approaches to the stated problem. Fellows who accept a tenure track position following the fellowship may apply for research starter grants.

AHRQ Grants for Health Services Research Dissertation (R36)

Application Submission Dates(s): April 10, August 10, December 10, annually.  This Funding Opportunity Announcement will use the dissertation grant (R36) award mechanism. The total direct costs awarded under this FOA for dissertations must not exceed $35,000 for the entire project period, which should be a minimum of nine months and not to exceed 17 months in duration.  The proposed grant start date should not be sooner than five months after the submission deadline.

Tumor Microenvironment Network (TMEN) (U54)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites cooperative agreement and NIH intramural applications from groups of investigators interested in becoming components of the NCI Tumor Microenvironment Network (TMEN). The main objective is to delineate mechanisms of tumor-stroma interactions in human cancer and to generate a comprehensive understanding of composition of the stroma in normal tissues as well as its roles in tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis. A total of $12.0 million/per year for 5 years will be awarded to fund up to six individual multidisciplinary Research Programs using the U54 cooperative agreement mechanism.

Genomics: GTL Facility for the Production Characterization of Proteins and Molecular Tags


The Genomics: GTL program (GTL) in the Office of Biological and Environmental Research (OBER) of the Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is a broad, microbe-based research program that will dramatically advance understanding of both individual microbes and complex microbial communities as whole living systems. To achieve this understanding, the scientific community needs access to resources that enable individual scientists to collect, access and analyze vast amounts of data that exceed the capabilities of their individual laboratories (see Genomics: GTL Roadmap at http://doegenomestolife.org/roadmap/index.shtml

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Aquatic Invasive Species Program (AISP) and the National Sea Grant College Program (NSGCP) are soliciting applications for aquatic invasive species research and outreach projects for specific activities listed in the PROGRAM GUIDANCE section below. They include (1) human health-related outreach activities related to the invasive species lionfish (Pterois volitans) in the southeast United States, (2) research related to control of invasive green crab (Carcinus maenus), and (3) research and outreach related to the control of several species of tunicates invading the northern east and west coasts of North America and related fishing grounds.

NIH Support for Conferences and Scientific Meetings (R13/U13)

This funding opportunity provides updated guidelines for National Institutes of Health (NIH) support of conferences and scientific meetings.  Any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to conduct the proposed conference or scientific meeting is invited to work with that individual’s institution to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Grants in basic research in neurobiology are available for established scientists working at accredited US academic institutions. Whitehall Foundation Grants-in-Aid

The Grants-in-Aid program is designed for researchers at the assistant professor level who experience difficulty in competing for research funds because they have not yet become firmly established. Grants-in-Aid can also be made to senior scientists. All applications will be judged on the scientific merit and innovative aspects of the proposal, as well as on past performance and evidence of the applicant’s continued productivity. Grants-in-Aid are awarded for a one-year period and do not exceed $30,000.  The Foundation is currently interested in basic research in neurobiology.

Prostate Cancer Research Program Health Disparity Research Award

The intent of the Health Disparity Research Award is to encourage and support investigators who focus their research efforts on the disparity of prostate cancer within an affected population or community. Appropriate disparity focus areas include, but are not limited to, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, access to health care, insurance status, age, geography, and cultural beliefs.

DARPA Hybrid Insect MEMS

DARPA seeks innovative proposals to develop technology to create insect-cyborgs, possibly enabled by intimately integrating microsystems within insects, during their early stages of metamorphoses. The healing processes from one metamorphic stage to the next stage are expected to yield more reliable bio-electromechanical interface to insects, as compared to adhesively bonded systems to adult insects. Once these platforms are integrated, various microsystem payloads can be mounted on the platforms with the goal of controlling insect locomotion, sense local environment, and scavenge power. Multidisciplinary teams of engineers, physicists, and biologists are expected to work together to develop new technologies utilizing insect biology, while developing foundations for the new field of insect cyborg engineering. The HI-MEMS may also serve as vehicles to conduct research to answer basic questions in biology.

Small Animal Imaging Resource Program (U24)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications from extramural investigators for Small Animal Imaging Resources (SAIRs).  These grants will support: (a) shared imaging resources to be used by cancer investigators; (b) research related to small animal imaging technology or methodology; and (c) training of both professional and technical support personnel interested in the science and techniques of small animal imaging.

USAID Amazon Basin Conservation Initiative

USAID is seeking funding applications from Amazon-based and/or U.S.-based institutions, representing a mix of environmental and development partners performing under consortium partnering arrangements to conserve biodiversity and address priority threats and opportunities in the Amazon Basin.  (Please refer to the Program Description, Section C).  Subject to the availability of funds, USAID anticipates awarding three to five cooperative agreements in the range of $3 to $8 million each, for an intended total of $38 million over this five-year period of ABCI (2006-2010).

Bioinformatics and Assays Development Program 2 (BIAD2) - BAA 06-01

A critical area of focus for DHS is the protection of the homeland from the release of a biological agent. This focus is demonstrated by the BioWatch surveillance system and a number of programs initiated by HSARPA that are developing new sensor technologies. These include the Bioagent Autonomous Networked Detectors (BAND) and Rapid Automated Biological Identification System (RABIS) programs under solicitation RA03-01, as well as Instantaneous Bio-Aerosol Detector Systems (IBADS; BAA 04-18), Low-Cost Bio-Aerosol Detector Systems (LBADS; BAA 05-08), and Food Biological Agent Detection Sensors (FBADS; BAA 05-06) programs. As a complement to the technology program initiated under RA03-01, HSARPA initiated the Bioinformatics and Assays Development program (BIAD; BAA 04-03) to extend the existing family of detection and forensics assays as well as to develop next generation assays and new tools for assay development. (See www.hsarpabaa.com for details about these past solicitations.) Development of new sensor systems is not a priority for the BIAD2 program.

Basic Research Program in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense – 2007

The U.S. Army Research Office (ARO) announces the availability of Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) No. W911NF-06-R-0005 for Basic Research Program in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense of the Joint Science and Technology Office, Physical Science and Technology Division – 2007. The BAA sets forth basic research areas of interest to the Physical Science and Technology Basic Research Program of the Joint Chemical and Biological Defense Program. Basic research is systematic study directed toward greater knowledge or understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena and has the potential for broad, rather than specific, application. Proposals for basic research are solicited in the following sciences: Atmospheric and Space Sciences, Biological and Life Sciences, Chemistry, Cognitive and Neural Sciences, Computing and Information Science, Electronics, Mathematical Science, Materials Science, Mechanical Science, Physics, Terrestrial and Ocean Sciences, and Nanoscience.

Low Dose Radiation Research Program - Basic Biology

The Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) of the Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Human Research Program (HRP), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), hereby announce their interest in receiving grant applications for new research to develop a better scientific basis for understanding exposures and risks to humans from low doses or low fluences of ionizing radiation.

Application of Emerging Technologies for Cancer Research (R21, R21/R33, R33)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for research projects to evaluate the usefulness of emerging molecular technologies that are ready for initial application to clinical or biological questions in cancer research. Technology encompasses methods and tools that enable research, including, but not limited to, instrumentation, techniques, and devices. Food & Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate & Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants

Applications may be submitted by: (1) land-grant institutions, (2) colleges and universities having significant minority enrollments and a demonstrable capacity to carry out the teaching of food and agricultural sciences, and (3) other colleges and universities having a demonstrable capacity to carry out the teaching of food and agricultural sciences. An institution eligible to receive an award under this program includes a research foundation maintained by an eligible college or university.

Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program: senior posts in educational institutions abroad

These awards, viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Program, enable senior scholars to assume posts in educational institutions abroad. This year’s program includes opportunities in a variety of fields, most within the humanities and social sciences but some within the biological and physical/mathematical sciences. The posts are located in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, and Sweden.

Improving Diet and Physical Activity Assessment (R01)

The National Institutes of Health are interested in promoting innovative research for Improving Diet and Physical Activity Assessment. Applications may include development of novel assessment approaches; better methods to evaluate instruments; assessment tools for culturally diverse populations; across various age-groups including older adults; improved technology or applications of existing technology; or statistical methods to assess or correct for measurement errors or biases.

Nursing Research Grants (ANF)

The American Nurses Foundation (ANF) Nursing Research Grants Program is to encourage the research career development of all nurses. To effectively achieve this goal, the program supports research of beginning and experienced nurse researchers. The majority of the grants have subject restrictions required by the funding organization.  Several special awards are given in addition to the ANF awards. These awards are administered by ANF and vary in funding levels that are determined by the sponsoring organization. Please refer to the website for more  information.

Microbiology Fellowships for Minorities

The American Society for Microbiology welcomes applications for the Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship. The goal is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities completing doctoral degrees in the microbiological sciences. Candidates should provide evidence of a successful research plan developed in collaboration with a research advisor or mentor. The total stipend is for three years at $57,000.

Graduate Research Supplements to Current ECS and BES Awards to Broaden Participation of Underrepresented Students

Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc.-Faculty Start-up Awards

The Faculty Start-up Awards Program is open to all academic institutions in the States, Districts, and Territories of the United States of America that do not grant a doctoral degree in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering. Faculty members who start their first tenure-track appointment in one of these departments in 2006 are eligible for nomination in 2006.

Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc.-New Faculty Awards Program

The New Faculty Award provides an unrestricted research grant of $50,000 that is generally made before the new faculty members formally begin their first tenure-track appointment, and is based on institutional nomination.

U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command

The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command is soliciting research proposals for studies on the pathophysiology, surrogate markers, mechanisms and treatment of Parkinson's disease and Parkinson's-related neurodegenerative conditions to include initiating causes, interaction of environmental and genetic risk factors, epigenetic modifying factors, with emphasis on exposure factors encountered in military operations which may be neurotoxic or lead to neurodegenerative conditions.

Interdisciplinary Training for Undergraduates in Biological and Mathematical Sciences

The goal of the Undergraduate Biology and Mathematics (UBM) activity is to enhance undergraduate education and training at the intersection of the biological and mathematical sciences and to better prepare undergraduate biology or mathematics students to pursue graduate study and careers in fields that integrate the mathematical and biological sciences. The core of the activity is long-term research experiences for interdisciplinarily balanced teams of at least four undergraduates. Projects should focus on research at the intersection of the mathematical and biological sciences.

FANRP 2006 Request for Research Proposals-The Food Assistance and Nutrition Research Program is inviting proposals for its 2006 Competitive Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program. Camille, Henry Dreyfus Foundation--Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry

The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to further the development of scientific leadership in the field of environmental chemistry with a postdoctoral fellowship program. The award of $120,000 over two years is given to a faculty member who submits a proposal judged to be exceptional, both in its potential for leading edge contributions to environmental science, and in the arrangements for the education of the Fellow.

Structural Biology of Membrane Proteins (R01)

This PA solicits applications to develop research and methods to enhance the rate of membrane protein structure determination and to determine specific membrane protein structures. Air Quality, United States Department of Agriculture

Agriculture, forest, and range production practices have increasingly become subject to state and federal regulations that are meant to protect air resources. In many instances, data do not exist or are not representative of agricultural industries for the purpose of estimating emissions to the atmosphere of regulated pollutants or of public nuisances such as odors and fugitive dust. Goals of this program are: a) develop emission data for agriculture, forest, and range production practices that will lead to emission reduction targets, based on sound science, that will significantly improve air quality and protect human and environmental health; b) develop mitigation strategies that will increase adoption of best management practices to reduce agricultural emissions; c) and improve understanding of odor, gases, and particulate matter (PM) measurement, production, flux, fate and transport that will lead to a better understanding of the environmental fate of agricultural atmospheric emissions.

Midcareer Investigator Award in Mouse Pathobiology Research (K26)

The goals of NIH-supported career development programs are to help ensure that diverse pools of highly trained scientists are available in adequate numbers and in appropriate research areas to address the Nation’s biomedical, behavioral, and clinical needs. The Midcareer Investigator Award in Mouse Pathobiology Research seeks to support established pathobiologists to allow them to devote protected time to mouse pathobiology research and mentor beginning investigators.

Genes and Genome Systems Cluster

The Genes and Genome Systems Cluster supports studies on genomes and genetic mechanisms in all organisms, whether prokaryote, eukaryote, phage, or virus. Proposals on the structure, maintenance, expression, transfer, and stability of genetic information in DNA, RNA, and proteins and how those processes are regulated are appropriate. Areas of interest include genome organization, molecular and cellular evolution, replication, recombination, repair, and vertical and lateral transmission of heritable information. Scientific Cooperation Exchange Program with China

The Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agricultural Service, invites applications to the Scientific Cooperation Exchange Program with the People’s Republic of China (SCEP). Structural Biology of Membrane Proteins (R01)

Plant Genome Comparative Sequencing Program (PGCSP)

A Data Coordination Center for the Model Organism ENCODE Project

The purpose of this RFA is to solicit applications for a Biotechnology Resource Cooperative Agreement (U41) award to develop and implement a Data Coordination Center (DCC) as part of the ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements) Project for model organisms (modENCODE). The modENCODE Project will establish a Research Consortium that will conduct experiments to identify all of the sequence-based functional elements in the Caenorhabditis elegans and/or Drosophila melanogaster genomes.  Both computational and experimental approaches will be critical components of these efforts and a separate RFA, HG-06-006, “Identification of all functional elements in selected model organism genomes” is being issued to support the modENCODE Project.

Genes and Genome Systems Cluster

The Genes and Genome Systems Cluster supports studies on genomes and genetic mechanisms in all organisms, whether prokaryote, eukaryote, phage, or virus. Proposals on the structure, maintenance, expression, transfer, and stability of genetic information in DNA, RNA, and proteins and how those processes are regulated are appropriate. Areas of interest include genome organization, molecular and cellular evolution, replication, recombination, repair, and vertical and lateral transmission of heritable information. The Cognitive Neuroscience program seeks highly innovative proposals aimed at advancing a rigorous understanding of how the human brain supports thought, perception, affect, action, social processes, and other aspects of cognition and behavior.
