In addition to scholars from all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. The Center is also international and gladly accepts applications from scholars outside the United States. Areas of Special Interest -- Most of the Center's fellowships are unrestricted. Several, however, are designated for particular areas of research. These include environmental studies and history; English literature; art history; French history, literature, or culture; Asian Studies; and theology.

Structuring U.S. Innovation Policy: Creating a White House Office of Innovation Policy
http://www.itif.org/index.php?id=256
In a new report, Structuring U.S. Innovation Policy: Creating a White House Office of Innovation Policy, released today by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, Duke Law School professors Stuart Benjamin and Arti Rai propose that the Obama administration (or Congress, if Congress is willing) create an Office of Innovation Policy that would draw upon, and feed into, existing regulatory review processes but would have the specific mission of being the “innovation champion” within these processes.

http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/E9-14592.htm
The White House is asking for public comment as it updates a key interagency plan for ocean research priorities, which helps guide the agencies’ budget requests. Researchers welcomed the first plan, created in January 2007 by the National Science and Technology Council. Comments are due 17 July.
Ensuring Initial and Ongoing STEM Disciplinary Faculty Participation in MSPs
http://hub.mspnet.org/index.cfm/15319
STEM disciplinary faculty have been an integral part of the Math and Science Partnership programs' efforts to reform mathematics and science education. Ensuring the participation of STEM disciplinary faculty in MSP efforts requires understanding the factors that support and hinder their involvement, and taking steps to garner and sustain institutional support for their work.

Report Examines Status of Women Faculty in Science and Engineering
http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=12062
The congressionally mandated report examines how women at research-intensive universities fare compared with men at key transition points in their careers. Two national surveys were commissioned to help address the issue. The report's conclusions are based on the findings of these surveys of tenure-track and tenured faculty in six disciplines -- biology, chemistry, mathematics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and physics -- at 89 institutions in 2004 and 2005. The study committee also heard testimony and examined data from federal agencies, professional societies, individual university studies, and academic articles.

Mentoring Requirement for Postdoctoral Research Fellows
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappguide/nsf09_1/gpg_sigchanges.jsp
Chapter II – Section C.2d(i), Project Description, has had entirely new guidance added regarding mentoring activities. This was done to address the mentoring requirement of the America COMPETES Act. Each proposal that requests funding to support postdoctoral researchers must include, as a separate section within the 15-page project description, a description of the mentoring activities that will be provided for such individuals. Examples of such activities are provided and the mentoring plan will be evaluated during the merit review process, under the Broader Impacts criterion. Proposals that do not include a separate section on mentoring activities within the Project Description will be returned without review.

EDA will provide Public Works investments to support the construction or rehabilitation of essential public infrastructure and facilities necessary to generate or retain private sector jobs and investments, attract private sector capital, and promote regional competitiveness, including investments that expand and upgrade infrastructure to attract new industry, support technology-led development, accelerate new business development, and enhance the ability of regions to capitalize on opportunities presented by free trade.
DARPA 7-Day Biodefense
http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do?mode=VIEW&flag2006=false&oppId=48065
Creation Date: Jun 22, 2009
Original Closing Date for Applications: Jun 21, 2010
DARPA is soliciting innovative medical therapeutic research proposals in two areas: Soldier Protection and Biodefense. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches and revolutionary advances in science, devices, and/or systems. Specifically excluded are evolutionary or incremental improvements to existing practices. In recent years global surveillance networks have determined that the frequency and diversity with which new infectious microorganisms are emerging is increasing. While these increases are in part due to better reporting, there are multiple examples demonstrating this increase is promulgated by changes in natural systems, and potentially the activities of humans. Examples of factors implicated in the increase in new, emerging and re-emerging pathogens include: increased animal-human interface; increased population densities and co-location of vulnerable species with pathogen reservoirs; climate change, particularly affecting migration and spread of vectors; and narrowing of genetic diversity among food animal stocks. The expansion of biomedical technologies on the global stage is also suspected to increase the risk of orthogonal and highly diverse microorganisms.
Physical Intelligence (PI)
http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do?mode=VIEW&flag2006=false&oppId=47942
http://www.darpa.mil/dso/solicitations/sn09-35.htm
Posted Date: Jun 15, 2009
Current Closing Date for Applications: Jun 14, 2010
The Physical Intelligence Broad Agency Announcement seeks proposals addressing the physical basis of intelligence through the development of theory, demonstrations, and analytic tools. Our current understanding of the natural world lacks an effective description of the evolution of complexity evident in all living systems. The Physical Intelligence (PI) program hypothesizes that a unifying description called physical intelligence can be developed from currently fragmented disciplinary domains. The vision of the Physical Intelligence program is to develop a physically-grounded understanding of intelligence that applies to engineered systems and scales to high levels of organization. If achieved, this understanding might be applied to problems as diverse as the complexity of living systems, the nature of human intelligence, and the engineering of systems that spontaneously evolve intelligent behavior. This capability would find broad utility in the many defense systems requiring improved autonomy in unmanned systems and improved situational awareness and decision support in manned systems.

Harnessing Infrastructure for Building Reconnaissance (HIBR)
http://www.darpa.mil/STO/solicitations/BAA09-08/index.html
DARPA is developing broad and diverse technologies necessary for external sensing deep inside buildings with the objective of providing a suite of sensing technologies for situational awareness both above- and below-ground suitable across a broad range of building environments. The component technologies must support all external ISR concepts of operations ranging from pre-mission planning through detailed assessment of targeted structures, and live updates during mission execution. The intent of this solicitation, DARPA-BAA-09-08, Harnessing Infrastructure for Building Reconnaissance, is to investigate individual technological approaches that leverage building infrastructure to opportunistically collect information for interior awareness. DARPA believes that opportunistic sensing may be exploited to infer urban interior building awareness using exterior observations. Open to 10/9/2009.
