April 10, 2008 - CAREER Workshop Offered on TTVN
TEES Strategic Research Development and the TAMU RGS Office of Proposal Development are co-sponsoring a workshop on the NSF CAREER program, specifically aimed at faculty from TAMU System institutions and TEES divisions. Program requirements and proposal-writing strategies will be discussed, along with specific strategies for faculty at predominately undergraduate institutions.

OVERVIEW: The National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program targets early development of academic careers dedicated to stimulating the discovery process in which the excitement of research is enhanced by inspired teaching and enthusiastic learning. Successful PIs will propose creative, integrative, and effective research and education plans, developed within the context of the mission, goals, and resources of their organizations, and which build a firm foundation for a lifetime of contributions to the integration of research education.
Typical awards are $400,000 over 5 years (or $500,000 over 5 years for biology) with 425 awards expected this cycle.
Full proposals are due: July 22, 2008 for BIO, CISE and EHR; July 23, 2008 for ENG; July 24, 2008 for GEO, MPS, SBE, OPP
Eligibility: By proposal deadline: (1) hold doctorate in a field of science or engineering supported by NSF; (2) be untenured; and (3) have no previous CAREER award and have not applied more than twice previously. By October following the July deadline: (1) be employed in a tenure-track position as an assistant professor. For more program details, see NSF webpage on CAREER and solicitation.
The workshop will discuss: program and proposal requirements; advice on winning strategies and how to avoid common pitfalls; resources for education and broader impact components; examples of successful proposals; CAREER reviewer advice; and discussion and Q&A by recent CAREER winners.
